CCS certification training

Coding specialists are able to classify medical data from patient charts, often in a hospital, but also in various other health care settings. CCS proof of eligibility demonstrates a practitioner’s proven skills in data quality and accuracy, as well as proficiency in coding knowledge. CCS certification is a natural progression for professionals who have experience coding hospital and outpatient records. Coding specialists create coded data that is used by hospitals and healthcare providers to receive reimbursements from insurance companies or government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Researchers and public health officials also use this data to monitor trends and investigate new interventions.




  • Review patient charts and assign numeric codes to each diagnosis and procedure.
  • Have specialized knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT® coding systems.
  • Know medical terminology, pathological processes and pharmacological concepts.
  • Conditions of participation

Applicants must meet one of the following admission requirements to take the CCS exam:

  • Take courses in all of the following: Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Medical Terminology, Reimbursement Method, Intermediate / Advanced ICD Diagnostic Coding, and Procedural Coding and Medical Services (CPT / HCPCS)
  • At least two (2) years of related coding experience directly applying code; gold
  • Hold proof of CCA® eligibility plus one (1) year of coding experience to apply codes directly. gold
  • Have proof of coding from another certification body and one (1) year of coding experience directly applying gold codes
  • Hold proof of CCS-P®, RHIT® or RHIA® eligibility
  • Apply for the exam
  • Apply for the Certified Coding Specialistexam.
